From 1980 to 2020

Storyboard and view approach for a casual mobile game that focuses on fun and engagement of the main characters in a new world.

A "Brickling" has come out of the 80s arcade pixel game world to the current HD world with human objects and vibrant colours. It goes on a journey to explore this new world and meet other bricklings with the help of the players. The game focuses on the funny interaction and nostalgia for players.

Interactions and reactions of the Brickling and progression of the meta will lead to user motivation. Brickling requests the player to help him move forward in this new world.

Game Loop

Collect bricks from levels in core-game.
Use bricks to build for bricklings in metagame.
Enjoy reactions and interaction with bricklings.

Target Audience

Women in her 30s and above who have some idea about 1980s and are nostalgic about the events in the game. Focusing on USA market.

For this project, I have worked in collaboration with narrative designers, animators and art leads. The world and Bricking's reactions are kept engaging & funny to keep the players interested and engaged. We also made sure to add some amount of interaction so it feels like an active game and not a film. Below are few storyboards and view explorations I did for the project.

Finally we decided on a combination of isometric and perspective view to show the reactions and actions clearly. This also showed the modern approach that games take in contrast to the flat side view that games had in 1980. We also decided to keep some elements of 1980s like poses from Karate kid, Michael Jackson and The rocky.

Unfortunately, this game couldn't go into production completely and was put on hold. Check the link below for the company's page. Below are final perspective, flow prototype, and few storyboards and thumbnails.
